European destinations with breath-taking architecture

If there’s anything Europe is best known for, it’s the dynamic cities that all have their unique traditions, history and culture. And with such incredible cities, come the buildings and intricate architecture that give them their charming characters.

Indeed, all architecture enthusiasts should have Europe on the top of their list. With landmarks like the Colosseum, Pantheon, centuries-old thermal baths and gothic cathedrals, there’s no end to jaw-dropping architecture. Here are just a few cities that have to be on your to-do list.

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Known for its winding canals and dinky bridges, Amsterdam is picturesque in more ways than one. As well as the boat homes that line the water’s edges, Amsterdam is lined with tall town houses, some of which go back centuries. Many of them have been converted to hotels, museums and offices for some of the trendy startups that call the Dutch capital home.

What’s more, all of the city’s architectural highlights can easily be seen by bike. And if you want something that will get your head spinning, you couldn’t do better than the leaning houses. Believe it or not, but the design is intentional!

Budapest, Hungary

Often referred to as the Paris of Eastern Europe, Budapest boasts some of the most memorable architecture in Europe. The city is famous for its Art Nouveau styles that acknowledge Hungary’s eastern heritage.

What’s more, you can experience the architecture on multiple levels at the thermal baths. Gilded Baroque and Turkish architecture house these famous baths, allowing you to fully enjoy the experience in a stunning setting. Some baths even overlook the Budapest Parliament building across the river. How’s that for a view!

Rome, Italy

Perhaps one of the European cities that should be on everyone’s bucket list, no matter your interests, Rome is home to some of the most famous historical monuments in the world. Sign up to a walking holiday in Italy and take in the magnificence of the Colosseum, the Pantheon temple and St Peter’s Basilica, all of which stand as a homage to the rule of the Catholic Church.

Of course, when it comes to gilded opulence, nothing comes close to The Vatican. Where (almost) every square inch of space is covered in gold, and every ceiling is the canvas of the most celebrated artists in history, there’s simply nowhere like it in the world. And it’s a feat of architectural brilliance.

Paris, France

Also known as the City of Love, Paris’ architecture reflects the capital’s penchant for all matters of the heart. As well as it being the birthplace of Gothic architecture, you’ll also find Art Nouveau and Belle Époque influences all around the city. You simply can’t help but fall in love with the place.
